Observation for Improvement:
Towards Excellence in Teaching and Learning
Wednesday 28th January 2008
One Day Seminar: Protocol National, Castle Marina Road, Nottingham.

Who Should Attend
A one day training event looking at this pivotal quality improvement process for the FE sector. Suitable for:
new observers to build confidence in making judgements
experienced observers to refresh and extend skills and expertise
quality and senior managers to improve the standardisation of lesson grading, and explore best practice in achieving high impact internal observation processes.

Overview
Most FE providers have an internal observation process aimed at assuring quality and supporting improvements in teaching and learning. In response to the Framework for Excellence and growing Government, inspectorate and provider expectations of a selfregulating sector which delivers world-class education, training and skills, this practical and interactive event will aim to provide real case answers to common pitfalls in provider observation processes. Delegates will have the opportunity to improve their observation skills and extend their knowledge of best practice in using the observation of teaching and learning as a quality improvement tool.

What are current Ofsted expectations of internal observation processes?
What does the Framework for Excellence mean for our observation process?
How can we ensure accurate judgements on learning and progress?
How can we maximise and measure the impact of observations on improving teaching and learning?
How can we engage teachers in the process?
How might we further engage learners in the process?

One Day Seminar: Protocol National, Castle Marina Road, Nottingham.

Who Should Attend
This one day event is ideal for, Vice Principals, Finance Directors, MIS managers, senior curriculum managers, key decision makers in colleges, education providers and others with an interest in how the College sector works, particularly those who have an interest in and responsibility for audit.

What are the major factors which need to be considered in undertaking this exercise? Who are the key recipients of financial forecast? What are the key messages you want to give and how can
you manage them?

Measuring Success

Thursday 19th February 2009
One Day Seminar: Protocol National, Castle Marina Road, Nottingham.

Who Should Attend
This one day event is ideal for, Vice Principals, Finance Directors, MIS managers, senior curriculum managers, key decision makers in colleges, education providers and others with an interest in how the College sector works and how the data that you collect is used by the Inspectors.

Overview
With the increasing focus on quality of provision it is important that the underlying data supports the actual performance in the classroom. With the complexity of the ILR it is easy to see why sometimes the data does not support the outcomes of lesson observations. With the introduction of Minimum Levels of Performance by the LSC and the focus on demonstrating improving success rates by Ofsted it is important to ensure accuracy of the data.

Aims of the day

  • Outline how Success Rates are calculated and how the data is presented to the LSC and Ofsted
  • Highlight common mistakes in the data and how you can overcome these issues
  • Provide you with practical solutions on how improve success rates.
